According to Stratford Police Insp. Mark Taylor, an officer in a marked cruiser attempted to stop the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox on Downie Street at around 4:30 p.m. because the vehicle’s exhaust pipe was dragging on the ground and it didn’t have a rear licence plate.

“The vehicle took off southbound on Downie, where it struck another vehicle at Lorne (Avenue),” Taylor said. “The cruiser wasn’t in pursuit of the vehicle at that time. Once the vehicle took off, the cruiser stopped the pursuit. Time, date, location – they pretty much nixed the idea of a safe pursuit.

“So once the officer turned on his lights and the vehicle took off, he just kind of backed off and followed at a distance. Once he got up to around Neumesiter (Motors), he noticed that the vehicle had got into an accident at that corner.”

Taylor said the Equinox struck a Kia Sportage at the intersection of Downie and Lorne. While the driver and two passengers of the Equinox were not injured, a four-year-old girl in the Sportage was taken to hospital to receive stitches for a cut to her face. The two other people in the vehicle were taken to hospital as a precaution.

All three people in the Sportage at the time of the collision have since been released from hospital.

While the 26-year-old woman is currently only facing charges related to the collision and her alleged flight from police, Taylor said Stratford police has impounded her vehicle to determine why she fled from police and whether any additional charges are necessary.
