Bruce Hyderman has a lot of friends – his Honour Ride 2020 could have upwards of 50 people in the procession.

“It’s (early in the week but) already fellow biking enthusiasts have been contacting me and wanting to get involved,” Hyderman said this past weekend.

The approximately one-hour motorcycle drive-by is slated for Saturday at 11 a.m., weather permitting of course – and the outlook indicates ideal conditions will prevail. The staging area will be in Guindon Park (east entrance, closest to Cornwall), the parking lot at the cross-country ski area. But, riders being extra careful about physical distancing have the option of joining the ride on Vincent Massey Drive, as the motorcyclists make their way towards Heritage Manor.

Hyderman said he’s passed along his idea for a ride to Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement and the Cornwall Police Service, and he said everyone has been supportive. The route was to be finalized early this week, the drive-by to go past Cornwall Community Hospital, Heartwood, Glen Stor Dun Lodge and Heritage Manor.

“It’s a very important ride to me and a few of my buddies,” Hyderman said. “I feel that we need to let them know that as a community we appreciate the work they’re doing to keep us safe and healthy. . . I’m older, I’ve been watching COVID-19. It’s still there and active, and we need to be smart about it. And we need to show our support to these amazing people (on the front lines).”

Hyderman said he had bikes for years, took a break from riding while raising a family, but now that he’s retired, it’s a fun hobby once again.

For his Honour Ride –which he’s been getting lots of help organizing from Jay Roberts – participants are being asked to wear red, and red ribbons will be placed on handlebars, to acknowledge those who’ve passed away as a result of COVID-19. Hyderman said community-minded motorcyclists from all over the area will be participating, and that anyone wishing to join can get more details by reaching out to him on Facebook.

“It’s a drive-by, not a rally – we won’t be social gathering (before or after),’’ he said. “But we’ll clap and yell and say thank-you (at drive-bys), and if we see any (first responder vehicles during the ride) we’ll honk our horns.’’
