Murder hearing opens in Sudbury next week

A Greater Sudbury man facing eight charges in connection with the stabbing of three people, one of them fatally, at a party in 2018 will start his preliminary hearing on Monday
The preliminary hearing for Tyler Sels, 21, is scheduled for 15 days. A preliminary hearing is held to determine whether there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.
Sels is facing one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of assault with a weapon, three counts of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, and two counts of breach of probation.
According to Greater Sudbury Police, Charles St. Jean, 27, succumbed to knife wounds while two others were transported to hospital for treatment of stabbing injuries. They were subsequently released.
The Star learned the Friday night party was a celebration of life for a young man who had recently died. The party was held outside a home on Levesque Street, off The Kingsway, in September 2018.
About 50 people were present at the party, said police, when violence broke out shortly after midnight.
The accused was not connected to the group of friends, according to sources The Sudbury Star contacted, but showed up at the party from a neighbouring residence.
The Greater Sudbury Police criminal investigations division, assisted by the police service’s integrated crime team, tactical team and uniform officers, investigated the incident and asked that anyone with information to come forward.
