Police digest: Sexting ends in extortion bid

A moment of bad judgement has potentially cost a local man a lifetime of regret.

Police report the man was convinced to expose himself during an online chat with a stranger on the weekend. Once the man did so, the person he was speaking to attempted to extort him.

“During the course of conversing, both engaged in a video chat, at which time he was convinced to expose himself,” Const. Ed Sanchuk of the Norfolk OPP said this week in a news release.

“The victim immediately ended the video chat, at which time a demand for approximately $4,500 was made by the female in order for the photographs and video not to  be distributed to the victim’s family along with all of his social media contacts and various social media websites.

“No funds were sent and police were contacted immediately.”

Police advise computer users of all ages to be on their guard while online. The internet has increased social connectivity but it can also be a hangout for nefarious players.

“Police urge all computer users to be aware of the dangers of engaging in online web chats where explicit conversations and photographs are shared,” Insp. Joe Varga, head of the Norfolk OPP, said in a news release.

“Once it’s out there, you can’t get it back.”

Dog barks at SUV thief

The last a Simcoe resident saw their vehicle it was heading down the street with a thief at the wheel.

A barking dog woke the owner of the 2005 GMC Envoy around 1:10 a.m. Saturday as it was taken from an address on King Lane.

Norfolk OPP also received a report of stolen pickup in Simcoe later the same weekend.

The 2018 Ford F150 was taken from an address on Head Street North in the early morning hours of Sunday.

The black pickup has black-coloured rims and blacked out tailights. Police  report the keys were in the ignition when it was taken.

Stolen purse contained cash

A large quantity of cash has gone missing following the theft of a purse in Simcoe last week.

The purse was stolen from a home on Freeman Crescent sometime between 2 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Norfolk OPP are investigating.

Property stolen from vehicle

A music device was stolen from a parked vehicle in Simcoe this week.

The Walkman and auxiliary cord were stolen in the early morning hours of Monday.

Norfolk OPP are investigating.
