Police digest: SIU probes complaint

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit was called last week after a man arrested in Simcoe complained about feeling pain.

The 44-year-old man was arrested in connection with a theft complaint in the area of Walmart on the Queensway East Thursday over the noon hour.

The man was jailed overnight at Norfolk OPP headquarters on the Queensway West in Simcoe.

In an email Monday, SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said “When the man complained of pain the following morning (Friday), he was taken to hospital for treatment.”

OPP refer all inquiries to the SIU once the investigative unit opens a file.

The SIU is called anytime someone in Ontario is injured or killed during an interaction with police. The SIU is also called when someone alleges that a member of a police service sexually assaulted them.

 Vehicle chews up lawn

A local man was charged this weekend after a vehicle  was observed cutting across a lawn south of Delhi.

Police were notified of the situation on Henry Street around 10 a.m. Saturday. Police were told the motorist nearly ran into another vehicle that was parked along the roadway.

A 20-year-old Norfolk man has been charged with driving with a blood-alcohol content in excess of the legal limit.

Keys stolen at laundromat

Police have been provided with images of a man who stole a set of keys from behind a counter at Simcoe Laundry in the north end of town.

The theft occurred Tuesday of last week. A security camera captured an image of the person reaching behind the counter.

Norfolk OPP are perusing the footage in an effort to identify the suspect.

Home ransacked in Canfield

A home near Dunnville was ransacked following a break-and-enter last week.

The break-in occurred at a home in Canfield on Highway 3 while the house was vacant from March 10 through March 16.

Stolen were jewelry, electronics and musical instruments.

Haldimand OPP are investigating.

Reckless driving near Jarvis

Three teenagers face a number of charges after a vehicle was clocked doing more than twice the posted speed limit of 80 kilometres an hour near Jarvis last week.

The pullover on Highway 6 occurred around 11:15 p.m. Thursday.

A search of the vehicle turned up a quantity of alcohol and cannabis.

The 18-year-old male driver has been charged with racing a motor vehicle, drinking while driving with a novice permit, driving with an open container of alcohol available, and possession of cannabis under the age of 19.

A 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old male have been charged with possession of alcohol while underage.

Wiring stolen from storage shed

Wiring and electrical equipment worth more than $2,000 was stolen from a storage shed near Cayuga recently.

The theft at a property on Highway 3 occurred between March 8 and March 17.

Haldimand OPP are investigating.

Hardware store break-in

Suspect vehicles were spotted leaving the scene at a high rate of speed following a major theft in Cayuga this weekend.

Around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, suspects broke into the Home Hardware on Talbot Street East. They made off with two snow blowers and a lawn mower.

One of the vehicles involved was a black GMC Sierra pickup. It was spotted leaving the scene west bound on Talbot Street East. On its tail —  also at a high rate of speed — was a red- or maroon-coloured hatchback-style vehicle.

Information can also be shared with Crime Stoppers of Haldimand and Norfolk at 1-800-222-8477.

Hit-and-run in Simcoe

If you’ve spotted a dark-grey vehicle in your neighbourhood with extensive damage to the passenger-side door, you may want to contact the Norfolk OPP.

Between 6 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle parked along Thomson Road in Simcoe was side-swiped by the suspect vehicle.

Extensive damage was done to the driver’s side of the parked vehicle.

Callers to Crime Stoppers who help solve a crime are eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
