Jonathan Toornstra, 36, who is facing several drug- and weapons-related charges, was expected to enter a plea in a Chatham court room Monday as part of the resolution being sought in the case.

Toornstra, who had previously appeared several times in bail court via video, arrived at court in person to learn the matter has been adjourned to Oct. 16 to give a new judge, who will hear the plea, time to go over the material.

Handcuffed and with his hair pulled back in a ponytail, Toornstra was only in the prisoner’s box for a short time before the matter was adjourned.

Toornstra’s lawyer, Ken Marley, told Ontario Justice Gerri Wong this is a matter that will not be completed quickly and will require a fair bit of explanation.

He added he “regrettably” requested the matter be adjourned.

Toornstra was arrested and charged with several drug- and weapons-related offences in connection to Chatham-Kent police raiding an apartment in Chatham on April 10.

According to previously published reports, officers seized cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, hydromophone, GHB, ecstasy, morphine and fentanyl, along with an electronic digital scale, packaging materials, and $52,000 in cash, in what amounted to a $2.6-million drug bust.

A 9mm handgun and ammunition were also seized in the raid.

Toornstra has remained in custody since his arrest.
