The board held its first regular meeting since the end of November on Wednesday. It was the first in 15 years where Peter Hellyer of Simcoe was not the chairperson.

Subbing in his place was provincial appointee David Murphy of Port Dover. Murphy said the board will elect a new chair and vice chair at its next regular meeting at the end of February.

Hellyer did not attend Wednesday’s meeting. In his absence, Murphy thanked Hellyer for his many years of “exemplary service.”

“Peter was very analytical,” Murphy said. “When it came to keeping the numbers right, there was no one better than Peter. OPP headquarters in Orillia will not miss Peter. For 15 years, he did a great job.”

The Norfolk PSB provides civilian oversight of police services in Norfolk County. This includes staying on top of local enforcement issues and making sure the service provider – in this case the Norfolk OPP – is aware of concerns affecting the community.

The PSB also monitors policing costs. This year in Norfolk, the OPP contract is worth $12.9 million.

The PSB meeting at the end of November was the last for former Norfolk council representatives Charlie Luke and Jim Oliver.

Replacing them Wednesday were Delhi Coun. Mike Columbus and Waterford Coun. Kim Huffman.

For his part, Murphy is a provincial appointee. He has a year left in his term. Provincial appointee Carol Greentree of Simcoe wraps up her first appointment in November of this year.

Peter Hellyer was not available for comment.
