Spotlight on Southampton local heritage

The Southampton Cultural Heritage Conservancy continues to foster interest in and appreciation for Southampton’s cultural heritage, buildings, and places with two upcoming public, free events, designed to appeal to people interested in conservation of heritage properties, home owners, and history buffs.

Sept. 28, Charles Hazell, co-founder of Hazell Architects, one of the best-known heritage conservation firms in Canadian, and a Southampton property owner, will offer a hands-on demonstration, with practical suggestions, to help preserve the integrity and the important architectural features of public and residential buildings, with a focus on traditional and locally sourced materials.

The event begins at 2 p.m., at Timeless Materials on Rankin St., across from Foodland in Southampton.

Anyone who owns, loves, or has lived in an historic home will be drawn to “History in My Attic, Love Letters in My Eaves,” to be held Oct. 19 at Duffy’s Fish and Chips on High St. in Southampton at 7:30 p.m.

Following stories by three well-known presenters – Jane Kramer, John Cameron, and Katherine Leonard – audience members will be invited to share their stories and experiences at the open mic. All programs are free.

SCHC members are quick to dispel the impression they are just a few people only interested in legal action, but note the group has quickly grown to 230 people with a broader mandate to educate and engage the community in preserving the beautiful town.
