Who’s pushing big government now?

There are dramatically different approaches being put forward to reduce Canada’s carbon footprint.

The Green Party recommends the revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend system, which is incentive-oriented and requires little bureaucracy. The dividend is returned to citizens on a per capita basis.

The system is simple: buy anything that has created a ton of carbon dioxide (or will create a ton) and pay the carbon price. All of this money is returned to the economy.

In this system, the rich pay a little more, the poor receive a little more. Lower-income families will spend a higher percentage of their new income to live, which will stimulate the economy a bit more. Since poor families spend a higher percentage of their income in Canada, the economy gets an additional boost.

Because the carbon fee dividend system is incentive-oriented and requires minimal bureaucracy, it should appeal to conservative parties. Because it provides a small amount of income redistribution, it should appeal to the Liberal and NDP parties.

The plans presented by Conservative leader Andrew Sheer and Ontario Premier Doug Ford depend on regulation and inspections. They need big government, requiring a large bureaucracy and a lot of monitoring. They are more complicated and likely subject to interpretation and therefore more susceptible to pressure from major players. These plans are clearly not in line with conservative ideology and are more in line with socialist ideology.

Who would have thought Andrew Sheer and Doug Ford would be the ones pushing big government?

Debasing a jewel

For many years, Rock Lake property owners have participated in the Adopt a Highway Program. One of the areas that we have adopted is the beginning of Highway 637 (the Killarney Highway).

The Municipality of Killarney has recently seen major upgrades in its tourism and conference facilities. Also, the Killarney Highway provides access to the Point Grondine Park and to Killarney Provincial Park (a recognized jewel in the provincial parks system).

This area is acknowledged worldwide as one of natural beauty. So my question to the public traveling this highway is: Why do they find it acceptable to dump soiled disposable diapers, used condoms, trash, beer cans, etc., along this beautiful piece of paradise?

Autism families need help

To all the candidates running for prime minister: Listen up.

Federal elections are less than three months away.

We all know how the autism community has rallied and fought hard this last year. We’ve brought headlines, protests and never stayed quiet. Nor shall we, ever.

This time, it’s your turn. You should be knocking on our doors telling us how you will make a difference. How you will help us? How are you going to make permanent changes for our autistic individuals? Will you implement needs-based therapy? Cut the age caps? Offer lifelong services to those over the age of 18?

Or, will you continue to strip children, adolescents and adults with autism of their basic human rights? Will you continue to allow such a poor system to fail our children?

Will you hire more ABA therapists? Regulate their profession and lower their fees so we can afford to access services?

Will you help us make concrete changes or will you continue to be like the others and turn a blind eye, which I don’t recommend because we notice when you do this?

I’m going to take a leap of faith here, mostly because I’m exhausted and I don’t feel like typing another email, making another phone call, just to be told, “yes we will meet, as soon as I’m back” (which never happened by the way) or being ignored completely.

Instead of me always contacting you and rarely hearing back or told some line that keeps me holding on, here’s my contact: karlagagnon@hotmail.com.

Feel free to reach out, to tell my family and me how you plan on getting this right for our little boy and all his friends.

I look forward to hearing from you. And if I don’t, I sure know where you stand on the autism file.
