Sudbury murder case moving closer to trial

A Greater Sudbury man facing eight charges in connection with the stabbing of three people — one of them fatally — at a party off The Kingsway almost two years ago continues to work his way towards a trial.
A pre-trial meeting concerning Tyler Sels is scheduled to continue in Superior Court on Aug. 21. A pre-trial is a closed-door session involving a judge, defence lawyers and Crown representative to discuss issues in a case.
Sels, 22, is facing one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of assault with a weapon, four counts of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, and one count of breach of probation,
In January, Sels was committed to trial by Ontario Court Justice John Keast only a few days into his scheduled 15-day preliminary hearing. The Crown had been looking to call about 40 witnesses.
According to Greater Sudbury Police, Charles St. Jean, 27, succumbed to knife wounds while two others were transported to hospital for treatment of stabbing injuries and subsequently released.
The Star learned the Friday night party on Sept. 14, 2018, was a celebration of life for a young man who had recently died.
About 50 people were present, said police, when violence broke out shortly after midnight.
The accused was not connected to the group of friends, according to sources The Sudbury Star contacted, but showed up at the party from a neighbouring residence.
