“It’s incredible that with the right material and maintenance, a water main can be effective for more than 120 years,” said Mark Eby, Brant County’s director of infrastructure services. “This water main dates back to the 1890s and is the oldest in the county.”

The water main runs along King Edward Street in Paris and will be replaced as part of a major reconstruction project starting in July. The work, which will add left turn lanes to improve the flow of traffic, is expected to continue until December.

During construction, King Edward Street between Rest Acres Road and Grandville Circle/Misener Road West will be reduced to one lane during the day and open to two lanes overnight and on weekends.

“We’ve been working on infrastructure improvements for the south end of Paris for a period of time and public consultation has been part of the process,” Eby said. “When the community provided feedback this spring, we clearly heard that maintaining and upgrading infrastructure is a priority.

“Also, making the community more walkable and the addition of bikes lanes were noted as important to the community.”

Sidewalks will be added during the construction to improve walkability. The sanitary sewer is being extended along King Edward Street during construction to address future needs for wastewater servicing, Eby added.

Meanwhile, construction on Powerline Road from Rest Acres Road heading a half kilometre west will start in August and be completed by the end of November. Powerline Road will be closed during construction.

Plans call for a a multi-use trail to be added during construction while paved shoulders and lane widening will provide safer routes for cyclists and pedestrians.

A public meeting to share information about the King Edward Street and Powerline Road projects is being held at the Brant Sports Complex on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Homeowners in areas where construction is planned will receive written notices of the projects and signage will help direct traffic through the site. Regular updates will be posted at www.brant.ca/RoadConstruction as well as on social media.

A second phase of the project will begin in 2020 and includes three additional roundabouts being added to Rest Acres Road between Cobblestone Drive and Powerline Road. A public meeting about phase two will be announced at a later date.

“We understand and appreciate that construction is messy and inconvenient for many people,” Eby said. “We want to thank residents for their patience and understanding through this construction period.”

Brant County is working on a Paris master servicing plan which will likely develop into a $118 million strategy that will be implemented in phases over the next 32 years. Work on the plan is ongoing and is expected to come before Brant County Council for approval in the fall.

Construction costs:

Powerline Road from Rest Acres Road to 400 metres west – $791,772.

King Edward Street from Rest Acres Road to Grandville Circle including a 300-metre section of water main on Misener Road West – $3,574,613.

Rest Acres Road from Powerline Road to Rest Acres Road – $11,471,210.
