One of many surveillance cameras at the store caught the man in the act. He can be seen heading straight for the large yellow Children’s Miracle Network bin, quickly wheeling it through the store, out the front door and into the parking lot at about 3:30 a.m.

Store owner Ken Breau said the theft was planned. He went back over video from Saturday and saw what he believes is the same man, in the same clothing, coming into the store to ask for a drink of water.

It was 100 per cent planned,” said Breau. “He was looking at the bin and almost drooling.”

The yellow plastic donation bin is on wheels and is about four feet high and two feet wide.

Breau said customers have been dropping in money for the past year and a half.

It wasn’t completely full so we thought we didn’t need to empty it yet.”

He said it’s hard to estimate just how much money was in the bin but knows it was more than $1,000 and could be as much as $2,000.

Breau said the McMaster Children’s Hospital is close to his family’s heart. He said staff there “saved our daughter’s life many times.” Born with a rare genetic disorder, Amanda died last October at the age of 25.

Police say the suspect is white and was wearing a blue T-shirt, black Air Jordan track pants, grey shoes, a black flat-brim hat with white graffiti on the front and a black mask.
