High water takes toll in Long Point

Lake Erie has claimed another pedestrian beach access point in Long Point.
Tuesday, Norfolk County announced that a third pedestrian access has been closed on Woodstock Avenue out of concern for public safety.
The latest to close is located at 115b Woodstock Avenue.
Chris Baird, Norfolk’s manager of public works, says high water levels coupled with turbulent wave action continues to eat away at the Long Point beachfront.
Wave erosion has created sand cliffs with a considerable drop at three pedestrian accesses off Woodstock Avenue. The county worries someone not paying attention or accessing the entryways after sunset could take a tumble if they remain open.
The closure at 115b Woodstock Ave. follows closures of pedestrian access points at 97b Woodstock Ave. and 63b Woodstock Avenue.
Five county access points remain and are being monitored for pedestrian safety. Baird recalled Tuesday how heavy equipment had to be brought in not long ago to keep the access points open and level for beach-goers.
With powerful waves pounding the shore line, several cottages on Woodstock Avenue that used to have ample beach now have water lapping against the breakwalls off their back decks.
