Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital is opening a COVID-19 assessment centre on Wednesday to help Southwestern public health meet the province’s recent direction to increase testing.
The hospital will now host the third assessment centre in the Southwestern public health region, joining Woodstock Hospital, which opened the first one April 2, and by St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital.
The new centre’s hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. The facility is at 17 Bear St., just down the street from the hospital.
“In support of this direction and to ensure we have sufficient capacity for increased testing, we have determined the Tillsonburg assessment centre should open immediately,” Sandy Jansen, the President and CEO of the Tillsonburg and Ingersoll hospitals, said.

The centre will serve residents of Tillsonburg and its surrounding communities.
Prior to the assessment centre opening, residents could only be tested for COVID-19 at the Woodstock Hospital’s assessment centre, some family physician offices and the Tillsonburg hospital’s emergency department.
On the weekend, Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for increased testing for COVID-19.
The Ministry of Health expanded its guidelines for people who could get tested. Tests are now available to residents who show at least one symptom of COVID-19, even if it’s mild. People who believe they may have been exposed to COVID-19 or who are at risk to exposure through work can also be tested.
The Tillsonburg assessment centre won’t require a referral, but officials ask people to schedule an appointment for testing.
“Scheduling an appointment will also allow our team to prepare for your visit, avoid any delays and avoids line up,” Jodi Edwards, the director of clinical services at the Tillsonburg hospital, said, noting each visit should take less than 15 minutes.
