A 47-year-old from Vienna was driving the other vehicle, police said. They were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

London officer cleared in capture of man at hospital

A London officer won’t face any criminal charges after a 52-year-old man was injured while trying to escape from police at a hospital, the Special Investigations Unit announced Thursday.

Officers responded to a London home on Nov. 21, 2023, where a man had threatened the occupants with a pellet gun and threw a piece of asphalt through the window, the SIU said in a  report.

The man left before police arrived, but a suspect was located, arrested and taken to Victoria Hospital on Nov. 22 just before 1 a.m. for treatment of a pre-existing leg wound.

While being examined, the complainant, who was handcuffed and guarded by officers, suddenly ran from the room and reached the exit door when an officer caught him.

The officer grabbed the man and both fell through the exit doors, hitting the concrete on the sidewalk, the SIU said.

The man suffered multiple rib fractures and a broken collarbone.

Joseph Martino, the SIU director, said the officer caused the man’s injuries but his actions were justified because the man was trying to escape.

The SIU is an independent agency that probes cases of serious injury, death and allegations of sexual assault involving police officers.

High school ‘swatting’ prompts police warning

Chatham-Kent police are warning against “swatting” after responding to false weapons calls at a Chatham high school twice this week.

Officers called to John McGregor secondary school Monday and Wednesday quickly determined the calls were false, with no credible threat present, police said.

Investigation led to the identification of two female youths, who were referred to a youth officer for participation in a diversion program, police said. In a statement, police and Lambton Kent District school board officials warned against swatting, or falsely reporting serious crimes to generate a response by emergency services.

“Swatting incidents disrupt the normal functioning of emergency services and divert crucial resources away from genuine emergencies,” the statement read. “These mischievous acts put lives at risk and can have far-reaching consequences for both the victims and the perpetrators.”
