The Town is searching for talented photographers to complete a photography project that will help with the Town’s social media, marketing and website applications. The project is currently in the application process through CARES (Community and Regional Economic Support) and if accepted, the program will pay a portion for the project.

“We’re looking for photographs that are experiential, things that represent Mayerthorpe,” said Karen St. Martin, chief administration officer.

St. Martin added that the Town had searched for local photographers before but have not received what they are looking for in terms of subject matter.

While the Town has currently quoted professional photographers, council said the idea of keeping it local would be a great thing for everybody. Deputy Mayor Sandy Morton added if the Town gave them what they are looking for, they are sure local talent could come up with pictures that the Town would be happy with.

Mayor Janet Jabush said finding a talented local photographer would not only benefit the photographer but ensure whoever they chose would be around for the big events that take place every year rather than hiring someone from out of town.

“We want [to show] life in Mayerthorpe,” said Coun. Bernie Jagola.

The Town obtained a quote to provide lifestyle and landscape photos utilizing models specifically where the photos are taken in town settings. The quote for a professional to come in and take these photos came to $14,500. This type of photography project qualifies under the CARES program guidelines. The Town also reached out to Onoway and Alberta Beach requesting their consideration in partnering in this project.

“I support the idea of having a professional do it. However, I’d like to see more quotes,” said Coun. Bernie Jagola.

“I’d like to see us reach out to the community, too. I know there are some very talented photographers. Possibly they might have the ability to give us what we’re looking for,” added Coun. Pat Hagman.
