Two residents of hospital nursing home test positive for COVID-19

COVID-19 death toll reaches 31 in Haldimand, Norfolk

Another COVID-19 related death was reported on Sunday morning, bringing the total number of deaths in Haldimand and Norfolk to 31.

Until Sunday, there had been no deaths recorded from the virus since April 26.

A news release issued by Norfolk County on Monday morning said two residents of Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home in Simcoe have tested positive for COVID-19. The residents currently have no symptoms of the disease.

“Tests have been ordered for all residents and staff,” said Matt Terry, director of corporate communications for Norfolk County. “The test results that have been received so far, beyond the two positive individuals, have been negative. Additional test results are pending.”

Residents are currently being self-isolated in their rooms, where they are also receiving all meals. Staff are wearing full personal protective equipment.

Health unit staff, working in collaboration with Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home staff, have recommended a full public health management plan.

According to numbers provided by the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit on Monday, there have been 206 local positive cases and 2,287 negative cases of COVID-19. Of those who have tested positive, 82 have recovered.

There are now four nursing homes or retirement homes in Haldimand and Norfolk that have had at least one resident test positive — Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home, Parkview Meadows in Townsend, Cedar Crossing in Simcoe and Anson Place in Hagersville.

Previously, one worker at Caressant Care in Courtland tested positive and two workers at Parkview Meadows tested positive.

A news release on Thursday night said all residents and employees of Cedar Crossing Retirement Home in Simcoe have been tested. Some test results are pending and those that have been reported to date are negative, except for the one resident.

Residents are currently being self-isolated in their rooms, where they are also receiving all meals. Staff have been advised to wear full personal protective equipment when caring for patients.

Health unit staff in collaboration with the Cedar Crossing team have initiated a full public health management plan, said Terry.
