Young Canada Day pushes on

The Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show’s 92nd annual Young Canada Day will continue as scheduled on Oct. 8.
While anticipated labour disruptions have caused concern, fair organizers and volunteers have rallied to ensure the event will go on.
“We have always promoted this as one of the highlights of the fair and it has been just that for many generations,” General Manager George Araujo said in a press release. “The grandstand will be loud and proud again on Tuesday and anticipation is high for all students and volunteers alike!”
On Friday, the Grand Erie District School Board updated its original message about Young Canada Day.
A letter sent home with students from Grand Erie schools on Thursday left families concerned about the possibility of Young Canada Day happening.
The letter stated that all sports and field trips would be cancelled starting Monday, adding, “This includes all activities for Young Canada Day at the Norfolk County Fair on October 8th.“
“There does seem to be some miscommunication with our message yesterday and we sincerely apologize for that. Grand Erie District School Board has cancelled the field trips for Grand Erie students and staff to Young Canada Day, not the actual event itself,” Kimberly Newhouse, Grand Erie`s manager of communications and community relations, said in an email to the Reformer.
“Young Canada Day is run by the Norfolk County Fair, not Grand Erie. We do not have the authority to cancel this event, nor would we ever want to.”
After making that statement a press release was sent out stating that all field trips related to Young Canada Day for students and teachers to the fair will still be running.
“We’ve listened – to both our students and our families,” Brenda Blancher, Director of Education, said in the release.
“We understand how important Young Canada Day is for our students and what a tradition it is for the community. As a result, we’re making an exception in this case so that all field trips to Young Canada Day can proceed and our students can fully participate. This includes decorations for the grandstands that students have spent weeks making and all of the on-field activities that they have been practicing for.”
