The MNR is investigating after a pregnant purebred Hereford heifer was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound on a farm near Deseronto on Thanksgiving Sunday.

The owner of Gold Wing Ranch which is located between Napanee and Deseronto said the heifer had a puncture wound in her abdomen. Due early in 2020, she had been pasturing with a group of 10 bred heifers near a laneway on the farm. Owner Terry Kimmett places her value at $2,000-$3,000. Most of his sales, he says, are for freezer beef.

Kimmett said after a post about the killing received wide social media attention, a conservation officer was visiting the farm at press time accompanied by a canine unit to search for evidence.

Kimmett reported the incident to OPP on Wednesday but they had not yet visited the farm.

“I gave them a pretty good report,” Kimmett said.

He didn’t want to point fingers, but he suspects that jack-lighting; hunting at night with the use of lights, is how the animal met her demise.

“It was a puncture wound and there was no exit hole,” he said.

Kimmett said while the situation is distressing, “it’s another thing to deal with.”‘

He’s also had a death in the family over Thanksgiving and his farm is part of an ongoing land claim, he said.

He approaches it all with stoicism.

“You just deal with it. You can’t do anything about it.”
