Detectives were never convinced she was looking for a new life or running from a troubled past.

They believed she was murdered.

But a $250,000 reward failed to make a dent in the probe of the missing Perth, Australia mom.

“Lisa Brown was a mother of two young children, she was also a daughter and a sister,” West Australia Police Minister Michelle Roberts said at the time.

“Her killer remains at large and her family deserves answers. Detectives are confident more than one person in the community knows what happened to Lisa but for whatever reason have not spoken up.”

But life and police work are odd, often with more twists than an Agatha Christie drawing-room mystery.

While re-investigating Brown’s disappearance more than two decades ago, cops came upon the disappearance of another woman.

Rebecca Delalande, a 23-year-old sex worker who had never been reported missing, was friends with Lisa Brown.

Delalande had even dropped a dime to detectives with information concerning Brown’s disappearance.

Aussie prosecutor Ben Stanwix told the court that police only “happened upon” the disappearance of Delalande during a 2017 review of Brown’s disappearance.

Detectives reviewing the Brown case were keen on re-interviewing Rebecca Delalande. The problem was they couldn’t find her.

Into the wormhole, they went looking into Delalande’s disappearance.

Investigators concluded she had been beaten to death in a Perth-area home in November 2001.

At the time she was involved in a relationship with a man named Chris Blennerhassett, now 46.

During an argument in the bedroom of the house they shared, it’s alleged that Blennerhassett battered Delalande about the head.

He then disposed of her body “in a way that it can never be found.”

A roommate told cops the accused killer carried Delalande’s limp body to his car and drove off into the darkness.

Blennerhassett allegedly told pals he burnt her body in a 44-gallon drum.

The scene of the crime was “most likely” a factory owned by his father. There were dozens of a drums of flesh-disintegrating nitric acid.

Delalande’s was the chilling tale of a violent, abusive home and a one-way ticket to the streets from her early teens.

Next on the grand tour was heroin addiction, sex work and, finally, a violent death.

Published reports said she kept contact with her family. And she had wanted to go home to her mother.

But poverty forces people to make “terrible” choices. Her mother had a much younger child and didn’t want the baby infected by that world.

So, the door home was closed.

What lay ahead for poor Rebecca Delalande was unspeakable.

As for justice? That might be a while coming as well.

The two-week murder trial of Chris Blennerhassett was torpedoed Thursday due to “new developments.”

He remains in custody.

And cops? It’s back to the drawing board.
