Celebrating Sarnia-Lambton 'good news' announcements

Article content

It’s been an exciting summer so far in Sarnia-Lambton. The schedule of community events in addition to meetings with constituents has kept me very busy. It has been great to see so many of you out enjoying the sunshine. There are several important “good news” announcements that I am excited to share.

By now you will have heard that we received the federal funding of $6 million for the Oversized Load Corridor. This was something I had promised to get when I was running to become your MP, and I am happy to fulfill that promise.

Another announcement is the identification of one of Sarnia’s First World War soldiers, whose unmarked grave remained a mystery until Allen Millers research identified him as Richard Knight. Our office worked with the cemetery and the Defense Ministry to obtain the marker for the grave, which is now viewable at Lakeview Cemetery.

The introduction of No Wake zones by St. Clair Township, and currently under consideration by Point Edward to address the high water levels and flooding caused by high boat speeds is something to be aware of as well.

You may have noticed longer lines of cars and trucks at the Bluewater Bridge. Although overall traffic is down, the peaks are higher than in the past, and that situation is made worse due to the situation with the US border security guards. The U.S. has redeployed many of the border security resources to address issues at the Mexican border, leading to shortages of personnel to staff many of the crossings at the Canadian border. The U.S. government will spend $1 billion over the next three years to address the gap, but be aware that delays may be common until that fix is in place. Border wait times going into the U.S. can be seen at this link: https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/border-times-us

The last of the summer weeks has been filled with terrific events, from the Chris Hadfield walk of fame celebration, to the Tall Ships, and the Bluewater Granfondo Bike Race.

As we approach election season, I want to re-cap the achievements over my four years as your MP: We received over $200 million of support from the federal government, which was used to create jobs, bringing our unemployment rate from nine per cent to about five per cent. There was support for the move to the bio-economy, and for Lambton College, and infrastructure funds supported the capital plans of each municipality.

My advocacy for seniors was recognized nationally and internationally, and while I feel honoured with this achievement, there is still much more to be done. Life has become less affordable under the Liberal government, and not only for seniors. I see on a regular basis young people, veterans, seniors and singles who are struggling to pay their bills. According to recent statistics, 48 per cent of Canadians are within $200 each month of not being able to pay their bills. That will be a key issue for the next government to address.

On a personal note, my experiences as Critic for Science and Chair for Status of Women, the promotion to Shadow Health Minister and the front bench, the weekly national television interviews and panels, and the many accolades from Most Collegial Parliamentarian to the Sharon Carstairs award for advocacy on my palliative care bill are ones I am proud of, and will cherish.

I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail!

Until then, I am available to help on any federal issue you may have – please call the constituency office at 519-383-6600 or email me directly at Marilyn.Gladu@parl.gc.ca.
