Exhibit showcases Brant, Norfolk pottery

WATERFORD — Waterford Heritage and Agricultural Museum has many events set for the late summer and fall.

Curator James Christison and assistant curator Catherine Caughell are excited with the variety of exhibits and presentations being staged at the museum at 159 Nichol St..

Until Jan. 11, the exhibit, Potters of Brant and Norfolk, displays a collection of over 90 pieces. The heritage of pottery production in Brant and Norfolk counties through the 19th and early 20th centuries is featured. There are excavated and museum pieces, as well as rare examples on loan from private collections.

Christison proclaims in the museum’s quarterly newsletter that Potters of Brant and Norfolk is one of the best in-house exhibits ever mounted by the museum. He explains that the show includes the largest grouping of Gilbert from Port Ryerse in Norfolk, rare forms from Brantford potteries and stunning Arhens pieces from Paris.

On Sept. 12, Number please! A History of the Dominion Telephone Company opens as part of the museum’s Our Community exhibition series. The Waterford company was the third largest manufacturer of telephones in Canada and was in the forefront of technology. The exhibit shows five phones produced at the Alice Street factory, including a rare fiddle-back phone.

On opening day at 7 p.m., the Waterford and Townsend Historical Society has arranged a talk by Brian Wood, curator at the Bell Homestead in Brantford. He will speak about Alexander Graham Bell’s history and the invention of the telephone. He will bring samples of Bell’s early phones.

The museum will host its Antiques and Collectibles Roadshow on Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Experts in a variety of fields will appraise your treasures for $5 an item. Proceeds go to the museum. Appraisals are verbal and based on knowledge and experience. Written appraisals for insurance purposes will not be provided. Appraisal tickets available at the door. Tickets include a 10 per cent discount at the Waterford Antique Market on Alice Street, sponsor of the event.

During Pumpkinfest, join the Moonlight and Mayhem: Walking Tour of Old Waterford at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Oct, 12, 13 and 14. The tour begins at the museum, regardless of weather, So, dress accordingly. Tickets are $20 each and pre-registration is required. Ticket sales open Sept. 18 at 10 a.m.

From 1914 to 1919, entire communities banded together to create remarkable signature quilts for the Red Cross to support local soldiers and the war effort. Quilting for a Cause: Red Cross Quilts of the First World War will be on display at the museum from Nov. 2 to Feb. 15.

On Nov. 16 at 7 p.m., there will be an exclusive evening viewing of the exhibit, with light refreshments. Exhibit co-curator Heather Smith, formerly of the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery in Saskatchewan, will speak briefly to the themes of the exhibit. A longer talk about the First World War Red Cross signature quilts is planned with the date to be determined.

If you missed the gala opening in June for the summer exhibit of The New Cockshutt: 60th Anniversary of the 500 Series, you can still see the exhibit and the 556 tractor donated by George Burgin until Oct. 21. The gala was attended by more than 60 people, including members of the Cockshutt family.
