Whatever happened to freedom of speech and thought?

Only in Canada can we hold a sportscaster more accountable than our own prime minister.

Personally, I think what Justin Trudeau did many years ago is irrelevant to what he stands for today. If there is anyone out there that has never done something in their past that they regret please let me know and I will nominate you for sainthood.

What Don Cherry said during a segment of Coach’s Corner was what he thought. Maybe the words were ill chosen, but that is typically Cherry.

A quote I like from a site called Hillbillies Inc. is this: “It is okay for you to believe what you believe. It is not okay for you to demand others to believe the same way.”

Discussions are always better than arguments. An argument is to find out who is right and in Cherry’s case it was the sponsor and network worried about revenue. Where as a discussion is to find out what is right. In this case I do not believe there was much discussion, but simply ultimatums to both Cherry and Ron MacLean.

Frank Zappa once wrote that the “mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work if it is not open.” For all those critical (tending to find fault), where were you on November 11 at 11 a.m. and did you wear your poppy? That is all Cherry asked.

Remember this: “Peace” is not when everyone agrees. It is when we can respect our disagreements and still play in the same sandbox. Isn’t that why some people flee their own country and immigrate to our great country, Canada?

We all need to remember those who gave their lives to keep its freedoms for all future generations.

Albert Einstein wrote, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”.

In many cases our present education system is like that. Provincial exams that waste so much valuable teachers time are just the type of thing Einstein referred to in the above quote.

We will only have a truly excellent education system when we can harness the unique abilities of each and every student and that is not giving them all the same test.

It does not take a genius to figure out that students have different skill levels.

I vividly remember a Grade 4 student who was having trouble reading but in his dad’s garage at home he could take the motor of the lawn mower apart and reassemble it perfectly. He is now leading a successful life. Let our teachers teach and make the funding available to do the job correctly.

Finally from this disjointed column, remember “Love is always beautiful, hate is always ugly”.
