Celebrate more than once a year
Just looking at the amazing photos of this year’s 2019 Young Canada Day events at the Norfolk County Fair.
I think our young people need more opportunities like this where the emphasis is not necessarily just on sports but more so a huge shared experience that involves many different aspects such as art, spirit, friendship, camaraderie, strength, homecrafts, etc.
Or perhaps, we could value just their attendance and their enthusiasm and spirit and energy shared with others. How about that?
Put down the phones and the technology and get outside and make noise in the sunshine in company with your peers. This should happen more than once a year! We have that amazing grandstand structure that sits unused for most of the year. Why is it not put to better use, allowing a place for our young people to gather and interact and celebrate?
There were two more mass shootings in the USA recently. I have to ask why?
I am 71 years old and like many others of my generation I’ve seen a huge change in the last 50 years.
When I was a teenager I went to Brantford Collegiate Institute. It was not uncommon to see a student at the end of the day take a rifle out of his locker, throw it over his shoulder and walk out of the door.
This is most likely hard for people today to believe, but it is true.
So, I have to ask, what has changed?
I believe if you really stop and think about it, it’s our culture.
Every time this happens our politicians and media bring up the gun control issue. Few mention the changes that have occurred in this time.
Video games and Hollywood movie producers make billions of dollars on gun violence, hate and anger. For the majority of people these games and movies don’t turn them into mass murderers. But in some cases, I believe it’s a factor.
Many of these killers isolate themselves from society for different reasons. They get in a state of hopelessness. Some have been abused in different ways and become mentally unstable. They watch these violent games and movies and become desensitized to the value of life and reality.
Technology has come a long way in my life and times, and has many positives, but there are also the negatives. We need to look at these negatives more seriously and try to do something about it. If we don’t, nothing is going to change. They are only going to get worse.
I do believe the Americans need to tighten up their controls on the accessibility of firearms.
