With so much disparity between the Sal Sabres and Facey Falcons football programs at the moment, their annual Sherwood Showdown has been eclipsed by the Supreme Strathcona Skirmish.

The Archbishop Jordan Scots and the Ardrossan Bisons have appeared to have been on a collision course all season long in the Metro League’s Division 2 Mikes Conference action, with both teams looking like legitimate contenders heading into their clash this Friday.

The Ardrossan Bisons, who won a Tier 3 title last season before moving up a division for the current campaign, are a perfect 4-0 to lead the Miles’ B Pool after defeating St. Francis Xavier 23-7 last Thursday.

It was only 4-0 at the half on successful and unsuccessful Laine Santos field goal attempts.

The Bisons were better in the second half, however, getting another Santos field goal and touchdowns from Evan McGeachy and Hayle Lueders for the win, with St. FX getting their lone touchdown late in the contest.

“Our defence continues to play aggressive football and creating turnovers and providing our offence with a short field to move the ball,” said Bisons head coach Paul Schwartz. “Laine Santos at kicker and receiver had a great game and is a huge asset for us. We had a raw rookie at running back, Joseph Funk, who showed flashes of what he can become for playoffs. Evan Mcgeachy at QB is a huge leader for us and will be a difference-maker come playoffs.”

Ardrossan has now outscored opponents 105-41.

The defending Miles champion Scots are in second place in the B Pool with a record of 3-1, coming off a week that saw the team ravaged by the flu and losing their first game.

“We came in much healthier, which made a huge difference,” said Scots head coach Frank Yuzyk. “It was a good bounce back game for us. The guys were really ready to play. We were very well prepared. We had an excellent scheme for what they were going to do. Our guys were flying to the ball. We did things I think that confused them. It was just an excellent effort overall. We got a big game from Tyler Schwartz, a Grade 11 linebacker. We have a Grade 10 corner, Seth Nwachukwu, who had an excellent game. He got burned once deep and just recovered really well. Nathan Nadeau, his coverage is so good that nobody throws at him. There were some real standout performances all around.”

Seun Ogundiya led the scoring for the Scots with three touchdowns, followed by single strikes into the end zone by Wesley Wispinksi, Sean Bleiken and Magnus Johannesson.

“Our offence moved the ball very well for us,” Yuzyk said. “Wes had a very big game as a Grade 12 for us. A new Grade 12 on our team, Anthony Warren, he had a bit of a breakout game, too. And Magnus had a very good game as well. Seun rushed for more than 200 yards. Sean didn’t have as many yards, but he is really rounding himself out into a more complete football player.

Both teams are looking forward to testing the mettle of the other Strathcona squad, with the Scots defeating the Bisons 23-3 in exhibition action at the start of the fall run.

“They are the defending champs and we consider ourselves the underdogs,” Schwartz said. “We are battling injuries and sickness but we keep fighting. We will give them everything we got and more and let the chips fall where they may.”

“We’re very excited about this game,” Yuzyk said. “They had some guys out when we saw them in the pre-season and those games don’t matter that much. They have an excellent program. Those guys are ballers. They are going to go from the opening whistle to the last. We are excited for the challenge.”

The Scots/Bisons battle takes place on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Emerald Hills Stadium in Sherwood Park.
