The Wallaceburg Tartans’ bid for a fifth straight SWOSSAA ‘AA’ senior girls’ basketball title was foiled Wednesday by the Windsor Kennedy Clippers.

The Clippers led by 20 after three quarters and held on for a 51-43 championship win in a packed gym at Wallaceburg District Secondary School.

Gabi Whiteye scored 12 points for the Tartans, Sam St. Croix had 10 and Laura Marcus added nine.

Whiteye was the only returning starter from last year’s OFSAA gold medallists.

The Tartans led 7-5 after the first quarter, but the Clippers hit five three-pointers in the second to take a 31-15 halftime lead.

The Clippers were up 47-27 going into the fourth. The Tartans cut the lead to six points in the final minute before falling short.

Aleshia Murray scored 20 for the Clippers and Maddy Bishop added 17.

The Clippers will go to the OFSAA ‘AA’ tournament Nov. 21-23 in Kingsville.

Lancers advance to OFSAA

The Ursuline Lancers swept the Holy Names Knights 3-0 in the SWOSSAA ‘AAA’ senior boys’ volleyball final Wednesday in Windsor.

The Lancers won 25-13, 27-25, 25-20 to earn a trip to the OFSAA championship Nov. 21-23 in Toronto.

“Strong serving and great passing led to a varied offence that was too much for the Knights to handle,” Lancers head coach Jeff Denomy wrote to the Daily News.

Also Wednesday, the Lancers beat the Knights 52-43 in the SWOSSAA ‘AAA’ junior girls’ basketball final at Holy Names.

Patriotes lose SWOSSAA final

The Pain Court Patriotes lost 3-1 to the Lajeunesse Royal in the SWOSSAA ‘A’ senior boys’ volleyball final Wednesday in Windsor.

However, both teams will go to the OFSAA tournament Nov. 21-23 hosted by Pain Court.

“We knew we had the bye into OFSAA,” Patriotes coach Ray Trahan said. “We tried to keep them in gear to play. We did play very well in our second game tonight.”

Pain Court won the second set 25-9 to even the match, but Lajeunesse won the next two.

Bailey Rolph led the Patriotes with 12 kills. Malcolm McArthur, Thomas Myers and Niall Hetherington added four apiece.

“We didn’t hit the ball. They hit it better,” Trahan said. “We’re looking forward towards the OFSAA tournament coming up next week. Learn from our mistakes tonight and hopefully we can do better during OFSAA.”

The Patriotes won the LKSSAA title last week despite losing six players from last year’s squad.

“We came a long way,” Trahan said. “… I’m proud of the boys. Yes, we had the bye to OFSAA, but we proved that we belong there.”

Also Wednesday, the Blenheim Bobcats lost to Lajeunesse in the SWOSSAA ‘A’ senior girls’ basketball final at Blenheim District High School. No score was submitted.

The CKSS Golden Hawks lost to LaSalle Sandwich 3-2 in the SWOSSAA ‘AAA’ junior boys’ volleyball final at Chatham-Kent Secondary School.
