Padres will meet Royals in Santa Clara semis

It’s been a long month for the Padres, who haven’t played a game since July 3, as the club’s first-round buy had them playing spectator during the quarter finals of the Santa Clara Baseball League.

After the dust settled and the first round ended, both the Neepawa Cubs and Carberry Royals completed decisive sweeps over their quarter final opponents, the Lakers and A’s, respectively.

The regular season champion Padres will finally take to the field at Rotary Republic Park in Portage la Prairie Monday, putting an end to what will be 19 days of rest between the teams’ season finale and playoff opener.

The Padres took the season series two games to one over the Royals however the defeat was a 15-0 trouncing against a severely depleted roster in the regular season finale. The team issued a plea via Twitter ahead of it’s game for fans willing to don the black and grey and suit up as a Padre for the night – not exactly an adequate measuring stick. Portage took the first two meetings 18-11 and 11-8.

Game 1 of the series is set for 7 p.m. Monday in Portage while Game 2 goes July 24 back in Carberry.

The second seeded Pirates will host the number three seed Cubs in the other semifinal, that series is set to begin July 24.
