After forcing overtime in Game 4 of their Ontario Minor Hockey Association midget rep playdown series, the Warriors came out on top of the 9-8 match on Thursday night.

Simcoe’s coach, Gary Lazou, said it was a messy game, but he’d rather win a messy game than lose one.

After the Warriors lost a tough game last Tuesday night, Lazou said it was a lesson for the boys that they need to work for everything they receive.

Simcoe quickly scored two goals in the first five minutes of action on Thursday against Ingersoll.

The Express came back throughout the rest of the period and left the first tied 2-2.

“They started to take over momentum and before you knew it we were down 5-2,” said Lazou.

Second period action ended with a score of 5-4 for the Express.

The third started with a goal from each team, pushing the score up to 6-5. Ingersoll then pulled ahead 8-5.

With two minutes left in play, Simcoe pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. The Warriors made it 8-6 with 1:32 left to play in the third.

Two more quick goals tied it up with 15 seconds left in the period, forcing overtime.

“All of the years I’ve been involved in hockey, playing and coaching, three goals with the goalie pulled in the last minute and a half of a game is something I’ve never seen,” said Lazou. “We carried the momentum to the overtime and with about three and a half minutes gone in the overtime we scored to win.”

Joel Storoschuk had a hat trick on the night, J.R. Milne added two, and Reid Lazou, Mason Kowalsky, Justin Dennison, and Troy Killick each had one goal, with Killick’s being the overtime winner.

“As bad as we were in our own end these guys never quit and it paid off in the end,” said Lazou.

The Warriors will be facing the Ayr Flames in the quarter finals. Throughout the season the two teams met three times, each winning one and one ending in a tie.

“They’re a good team, they play well in both ends of the rink,” said Lazou. “We’re going to have to play better in our own end for sure.”

The Flames won the coin toss and will have home-ice advantage in the first game. They will be facing off at 9:30 p.m. in Ayr on Wednesday and will return to Simcoe for a 6:15 p.m. puck drop on Friday.
