Carleton invited to Team Canada camp

Bridget Carleton of Chatham has been invited to the Canada Basketball senior women’s national team training camp being held this week in Edmonton.

Team Canada is preparing for the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup to be played Sept. 22-29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

However, Carleton is still playing for the Minnesota Lynx, who have qualified for the WNBA playoffs.

The Lynx (18-16) split their final two regular-season games to tie for seventh place. The sixth-place Seattle Storm also went 18-16 and won the tiebreaker, so they’ll host the Lynx in a first-round, single-elimination game Wednesday.

Chatham native Miranda Ayim, who grew up in London, was also invited to Team’s Canada camp. The Women’s AmeriCup is part of the qualifying process for the 2020 Olympics.

Raaymakers named to Panthers’ camp

Former London Knights goalie Joseph Raaymakers of Chatham was named Monday to the Florida Panthers’ training camp roster.

Camp begins Friday in Coral Springs, Fla.

Raaymakers, 21, was previously named to the Panthers’ roster for their rookie camp to be held Tuesday and Wednesday.

He’s slated to play this season at St. Francis Xavier University.

Blades lose in overtime

Christian Moccia and Seth Henderson each had a goal and an assist for the Blenheim Blades in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs in the Provincial Junior Hockey League pre-season Sunday.

Malcolm Campbell also scored for the Blades, who led 3-0 late in the third period at Blenheim Memorial Arena.

The Bulldogs drew even with three goals in the final 4:31 of regulation. Cale Johnston scored the winner 2:30 into overtime.

Chris Dewulf made 28 saves for the Blades (0-2-0-1), who outshot the Bulldogs 38-32.

Sharks’ lose second straight

Jordan Paquette scored in the Wheatley Omstead Sharks’ 6-1 loss to the Amherstburg Admirals in the PJHL pre-season Sunday in Amherstburg.

Kyle Metson made 26 saves for the Sharks (1-2-0-0), who have lost two straight.

The Sharks will host the Blenheim Blades at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Winless Kings lose to Flags

Josh Noah and Dawson Winchester scored in the Dresden Kings’ 4-2 loss to the Mooretown Flags in the PJHL pre-season Saturday in Mooretown.

Rhett Devries made 25 saves for the Kings (0-2-0-0).

The Kings will host the Mooretown Flags at 7:30 p.m. Friday in their pre-season finale.

Mulder’s hat trick powers Saints

Tyrone Mulder of Chatham scored three goals for the St. Clair Saints in a 6-0 win over the Redeemer Royals in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s soccer Saturday in Ancaster.

Mulder scored a team-high six goals in eight games last season as a rookie.

Lancers tournament runners-up

The Ursuline Lancers lost to reigning OFSAA ‘AA’ champion St. Catharines Eden 25-23, 23-25, 15-11 in the final of the St. Michael senior boys’ volleyball tournament Saturday in Stratford.

The Lancers reached the final by beating host St. Michael and Hamilton Cardinal Newman in the playoffs after winning their pool with a 12-0 record.

Zack Myers, Kyle Wammes and Clarke Denomy were the Lancers’ top players.

The Lancers will play this weekend at McMaster University.
