McGregor chosen for Team Canada

Forward Tyler McGregor of Forest has been named again to Canada’s national para hockey team.

He’s played for the national team since 2012 and is a two-time Paralympic medallist.

McGregor was first in goals (six) and tied for second in points (eight) at the team selection camp that ended Saturday in Calgary.

He scored twice for Team White in a 5-4 shootout loss to Team Red in Saturday’s game.

Team White finished with a 2-2 record in four games.

The national team’s 20-man roster includes 18 returnees from the squad that won silver at the 2019 world championship.

“We’re excited about the group of players we have named to Team Canada,” head coach Ken Babey said in a statement. “The level of competition during selection camp was high, and we knew coming in there would be tough decisions ahead of us. I think it’s a great mix of skill, speed and experience, and we’re looking forward to getting the season going.”

Josling, Hjorth score at Prospect Tournament

Sarnia Sting forward Sean Josling scored for the Chicago Blackhawks in a 6-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the NHL Prospect Tournament on Saturday in Traverse City, Mich.

Sting defenceman Eric Hjorth scored for the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 3-2 overtime win against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

Sting forwards Brayden Guy and Ryan McGregor are also playing for the Blue Jackets. Sting forward Sam Bitten is on the Wild.

The tournament round-robin ends Monday.

Rees scores goal in Hurricanes’ win

Sting forward Jamieson Rees scored for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 7-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the NHL Prospects Showcase on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

The Hurricanes lost to the Washington Capitals 10-3 on Saturday.

They’ll end the tournament Tuesday against the Nashville Predators.

Rees was a second-round pick by the Hurricanes in this year’s NHL draft.

Lions baseball team loses three

The Lambton Lions are off to a 0-3 start in their debut season in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association baseball league.

The Lions were held to three hits and Garrett Miller had their lone RBI in a 6-3 loss to the Durham Lords on Sunday in Oshawa. Losing pitcher Paul Sheeler gave up six runs in 5.1 innings.

On Saturday, the Lions lost to the Seneca Sting 12-1 and 9-4 in a doubleheader in Markham.

They had only three hits in Game 1 and losing pitcher Eric Steeves gave up nine runs – five earned – in four innings.

Brady Hogg belted a two-run homer and Joey Stock had three hits in Game 2. Sheeler was tagged with the loss after giving up five earned runs in 1.2 innings and reliever Jake Taylor allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings.

The Lions will host the St. Clair Saints in a doubleheader Wednesday at 6 and 8:30 p.m. at Errol Russell Park.

Lions lose soccer openers

The Lambton Lions women’s and men’s soccer teams lost their OCAA season openers to the Conestoga Condors on Saturday at Lambton College.

Abby Allardyce scored for the women’s team in a 4-1 loss.

Dwayne Lambert-Cadore and Juan Galindo Jr. scored for the men’s team in the second half of a 3-2 loss.

Both Lambton teams will visit Sheridan on Saturday and Toronto Mississauga on Sunday.

Flags, Flyers win in pre-season

Brock Perry scored two goals, including an empty-netter, in the Mooretown Flags’ 4-2 win over the Dresden Kings in the Provincial Junior Hockey League pre-season Saturday in Mooretown.

Brody Conlon and Nolan Farr also scored for the Flags. Winning goalie Bailey Reinders made 27 saves.

On Friday, the Petrolia Flyers beat the Kings 6-2 in Dresden.

Cameron Adam, Curtis Helps, Shane Boelens, Matt Hunt, Lucas Ross and Peyton Armitage scored for the Flyers. Austin Ball stopped 17 of 19 shots in the first two periods and Tyler Richardson made nine saves in the third.

Ace at Greenwood

Jim Kukura hit a hole-in-one Friday at Greenwood Golf Club on the 175-yard ninth hole with a six-iron.

The witnesses for his second career ace at Greenwood were Dave Williams, Frank Iconis and Kraig Howie.
