Who to watch at the 2018 Edmonton Marathon

The 27th edition of the Edmonton Marathon will see about 5,000 athletes run in a number of races Saturday and Sunday in central Edmonton.

The weekend slate starts Saturday at 10 a.m. for 3-km run and the 1-km kids’ fun run, followed by four events on Sunday, including the marathon walk (6 a.m. start), the marathon run (7 a.m.), the half marathon walk/run (8 a.m.), the Army 10-km walk/run (10:30 a.m.) and the 5-km walk/run (11:30 a.m.).

The start and finish are both on Jasper Avenue in front of the Shaw Conference Centre. The 42-km marathon course stretches between 34 St. and 111 Ave. on the east side to 141 St. and 80 Ave. on its west end.

About 90 per cent of runners registered in this year’s event come from Alberta.

Marathon runners to watch:

– Arturs Barekis, the 2014 men’s winner of the Edmonton Marathon.

– Ailsa MacDonald of St. Albert is coming off victory this year at the Whistler Ironman competition and should set the pace in the women’s elite race.

– World Indigenous Games winner Rilee ManyBears.

– Benard Onsare, a past men’s winner in Calgary and Vancouver

– 2013 Edmonton champ Lucas McAneney of Mississauga, Ont.

– Brendan Lunty of Camrose, the winner of the Edmonton race in 2016.

– runners in the men’s race are expected to finish between 9:15 a.m. and 9: 28 a.m.

– look for women’s runners at the finish line between 9:43 a.m. and 9:55 a.m.

Half Marathon runners to watch:

– Daniel Kipkoech, last year’s winner, has won the last three men’s Edmonton half marathons.

– Krista Duchene, a member of the 2016 Canadian Olympic team, comes into Edmonton’s women’s half marathon having place third at the Boston Marathon this year.

– Evan Esselink of Courtice, Ont., won the Houston Half Marathon earlier this year.

– Anthony Tomisch of Vancouver recently ran 30:38 in the Vancouver Sun Run.

– Rachel Cliff of Vancouver is the reigning Canadian record holder for the half marathon (1:10:08), is a two-time 10km Canadian road champion, and competed for Canada at this year’s Commonwealth Games.

– Rachel Hannah is a five-time Canadian road-racing champion and won bronze at the 2015 Pan-Am Games.

– Emily Setback of Cold Lake won the Canadian Half Marathon women’s title in 2016.
